Material Take off’s and Bill of Quantities

This is a short article on Material Take off’s and Bill of Quantities.

The Material Take off or Bill of Quantities is traditionally compiled by the Quantity Surveyor or Estimator. This is the case in countries like the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

In the USA and Canada however the Material Take off or Bill of Quantities is normally compiled by the Engineer or Estimator as traditionally the role of the Quantity Surveyor does not exist.

In more recent times, the role of the Quantity Surveyor is becoming more popular in the USA and Canada.

In the UK and Ireland for example, it is evident in the construction industry that the traditional Quantity Surveying skill of measurement, Material Take off’s and Bill of Quantities is not being emphasised like it used to. Instead, graduates are more focused on the contractual and financial side of Quantity Surveying (As this is also very important).
